Adam McKay's upcoming Dick Cheney biopic Vice was the surprise nominations leader Thursday morning when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, to be handed out in a month's time. Note that last year's biggest Golden Globe film nominee, The Shape of Water, eventually went on to become the Oscar best picture winner, though such an outcome feels highly unlikely for the Cheney film.

Peter Farrelly's 1960s-set drama (or "comedy" in HFPA speak) Green Book and Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born remake (slotted into the drama field at the request of the studio) also bolstered their already strong awards season credentials by picking up 5 nominations apiece, as did Yorgos Lanthimos' unique costume dramedy The Favourite, which looks like it could be another major awards-season player this year. And, with a Globe best picture nomination in hand, Disney's yet-to-be-released (or reviewed) Mary Poppins Returns seems to have confirmed recent buzz that—at minimum—it will be a December box office hit, and could be headed to Oscar nominations as well.

In a break with convention, none of the HFPA's best picture nominees this year are out-and-out surprises. Coming closest is the poorly reviewed Bohemian Rhapsody, which certainly helped its slimmer, though not implausible, Oscar chances with a Globes best picture nod.

Best picture snubs include the critically acclaimed middle school comedy Eighth Grade (a few experts thought it could sneak in, though comedy is an unsually crowded field this year) and the increasingly floundering Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, which is also being ignored by critic groups and looks likely to be shut out of any major awards.

TV Shows with Most Golden Globe Nominations - 2018

After scoring 18 Emmy nominations, FX's miniseries The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story picked up four Golden Globe nominations to lead all of this year's TV nominees.

The HFPA recognized numerous first-year shows, which constituted four of the five best drama series nominees (all but FX's ending The Americans) and three of the comedy nominees (with The Good Place and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel the only returnees).

The most surprising best drama omission was The Handmaid's Tale (with other snubs including This Is Us and Westworld), while the massive critical hit Atlanta failed to connect with the HFPA beyond an acting nod for Donald Glover. Note that this year's Emmy nominations leader, Game of Thrones, was not eligible for the Globes due to different time windows for the two awards.

Green Book will win the Oscar for best picture. It's got all the ingredients, and I love it.

It's not enough that we gave all the money to Black panther and Bohemian rhapsody, now we are also giving awards to bad movies. Tragic

astorado, the Globes are notorious for snubbing older series in favor of new ones. It doesn't help that foreign viewers (including those in the UK) are casually dismissive of long-running shows, usually just because they don't have easy access to watch, say, Mad Men while it was airing new episodes. I once saw some "Best TV of ____" UK list like Mad Men Season 2 as the 37th best show of the year. HFPA's voters are a small group based outside the US, so it's just way easier for them to see the first episodes of a new series than to keep up with a show in Season 6, etc.

Did they forget or did not watch BETTER CALL SAUL ??

Kind of disappointed Billy Porter was nominated but not one of the amazing actresses of Pose. They've also proved they're worth a nomination.

I hope for A Star is Born and Gaga
