The show isn’t great, exactly. But it’s also a bit smarter than we might have expected. In the early going at least, “BH90210” is campy, but self-aware.

The end result is a mostly fun but sometimes uneven venture into territory in which not all of the surviving headliners are creatively comfortable. Making things more complicated, all of the stars are executive producers on the series so the breadth of relatable vulnerability is limited.

"Meta" is the word used most to describe this strange take on a reboot, which in its very weirdness will have viewers—all of whom will be those that watched the original series when it aired in real-time, none of whom will be fans that aren't the ages of the actors/characters as it will make absolutely no sense to them.

Much of it, frankly, feels too much like a middle-aged "Riverdale," and those who give the whole meta aspect any thought will likely become woozy as the cast debates the wisdom and value of a revival in the midst of, you know, doing one.

This detachment from reality effectively neuters the show’s myriad soapy storylines — ranging from financial woes to extramarital escapades — giving the whole thing an unfortunately low-stakes vibe.

This blend of meta autobiography, parody, Hollywood satire and unapologetic soap opera has an amusing takeoff point and makes frequently effective use of its cast without ever delivering an execution sharp enough to live up to its premise.

It’s meant solely for die-hard fans of the old show, while not really being a continuation of it. Even at its best, it tops out at mediocre. ... After a while, the sheer oddity of it all becomes a bit of a hook unto itself.

The inside jokes pile up — a few of them actually funny — and there's an undeniable pleasure in revisiting this show and this cast. Except, of course, it's not the real "show" or "cast," but a bunch of actors pretending to be themselves, and probably wondering in the meantime whether the paycheck will be worth the aggravation.

It’s not quite a mockumentary, and not quite a campy bit of high art. What it winds up being is an extended meditation of getting a TV show off the ground, a very insular and kind of dull topic for a show that wants to play well outside of TMZ’s Thirty Mile Zone.

There are a lot of spinning plates, and while none of them come crashing down, they wobble, slowly. Watching the first two episodes made me nervous: I kept expecting the whole thing to tip over into catastrophe. Instead, it stays in mediocrity.

Totally loving the new spin. The writing is great, the humor is on target, and the chemistry between the cast is still there. DefinitelyTotally loving the new spin. The cast still has its chemistry, but everything else feels contrived and forced. There really is no point in watching this, sadly.

The writing is lazy, like final season of game of thrones lazy. The group dynamic feels forced.
Gabrielle's lesbian feelings feels very forced and cringy. Sure, its easier to cover certain topics that were a no-go in the 90s, but was this really the best way to that? In the very very first episode just throw it out there?
Obviously the show also suffers from a missing Luke Perry, one of the more charismatic actors of the original show.

After watching the second episode I started the wonder if I wouldn't be better of watching Sharknado again, which is not a good thing.
