Call of Duty: Vanguard may be the best CoD installment to date with stunning graphics that shine on the new systems and finely tuned, balanced gun play. They bring a new and fresh approach to the WWII and D-Day scenario making the solo campaign just as enjoyable as the multiplayer.

Vanguard is an incremental iteration for the Call of Duty franchise. It’s a solid entry in the series that does well what Call of Duty does well, but it doesn’t stand-out as a landmark release. If you enjoy Call of Duty, haven’t played for a few years, or are new to franchise, then by all means jump in. The water’s fine.

Vanguard doesn’t stray too far away from the classic Call of Duty formula we have come to expect from the franchise over the past several years. In many ways, it’s a little more of the same. That said, Call of Duty: Vanguard is an incredibly robust package offering up tons of content for the buck. Zombies mode is far more enjoyable and varied, the single-player campaign is a visual stunner, and 20 MP maps at launch is nothing to sneeze at. If you have passed over Call of Duty over the last several years, it might be time to come back.

Sledgehammer Games clearly had high ambitions when approaching their third solo Call of Duty project. Doubling down on World War II was a smart idea to help the studio carve out its own identity separate from Infinity Ward and Treyarch. While Call of Duty: Vanguard doesn’t break the mold, it does succeed on most fronts, delivering one of the better multiplayer experiences in years for the franchise and a simplified Zombies mode that lowers the barrier of entry for those intimidated by past iterations.

With a reasonable campaign, a great multiplayer mode and a good but scanty Zombies mode, Call of Duty: Vanguard is a nice new part. Whether that is enough is something you know best.

It’s a great shooter game, CoD always is, but it's not the best in the series and the overly used WW2 backdrop is wearing thin. The pandemic would have played a part in this and kudos to the developers for still delivering a big game despite the lockdowns.

At launch, Call of Duty Vanguard feels like a solid step-up from Black Ops Cold War, but falls short of the benchmark that was Modern Warfare 2019. Together, Vanguard's three pillars make for a game that we’re frankly surprised is as cohesive and enjoyable as it is.

    Campaign

From my experience the campaign has been rather lacklustre, I was expecting something more grander in each front of the war. Instead what we have is a random weird group of people all from different fronts of the war joining as this super team to stop whatever the third Reich might try to do (forgive me, I've been finding the story hard to follow it's not that interesting). Instead of getting an in-depth story from each front of WW2 or any real information or historical accuracy we are set more for a cinematic movie experience games always fall into this unfortunate suicide. Each character, I'm failing to feel any genuine connection with them it just seems very lousy story-telling.

The main character is by all means a disgrace to the history of the war, it does little to commemorate the real fighter of the war. We also have characters which are painted as good guys, but in truth it's not really the case. The game seems to also talk a bit about racism/fascism as if only one side were guilty of this whilst if you know your history you know that this is simply not the case the game fails to portray both sides accurately which is an obvious indicator of tone-deaf behaviour of SHG for whatever reason. Polina is a shoehorned feminist character and the main character is some sort of terrible inclusionary to try and appease people who don't even play these games.

The worst part of the campaign has to be the pilot section, never have I seen such a poor set piece the plane movement is just woeful the plane controls are terrible and at times it seems unclear how to properly attack pilots because it is so heavily restricted. Then we have from segment to segment for each character feeling very rushed and unexplained which doesn't do anything for the story. In short, these mini-stories feel like they do little for the grander scheme of the story. Perhaps it would have been better to tell a real story with just one person, SHG failed to do that with their last WW2 game and they've failed to do it once again.

I'm going to end this with, if you want to include strong female and a diverse range of race whatever I don't care, just don't use a real war to get your fan fiction. Many people have lost loved ones and this story seems very preachy and it does nothing to respect those who fought that war and it does nothing new to this specific war. I'd score it campaign/story as a 4/10, whilst it was mostly bad it had a few interesting points but like I said it is using a very sensitive point of time which many of us have lost loved ones from this... It comes across as very insensitive by SHG like they don't care and they're only trying to tick of quotas, this is hard to defend for me.

    Graphics

Graphically it looks like most games of a triple A standard, it looks nice. Yet, we have to talk about player visibility whilst I've not touched Multi/Zombies yet I've been finding it pretty challenging to properly spot enemies. Whilst the graphics are decent I wouldn't turn around say its something to write home about.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Gameplay

Gameplay an upgrade from Cold War, the obvious integration of that MW2019 engine and other things fit in nicely.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Multiplayer

The game runs as you'd expect from any COD game, its standard boot on ground experience. It flows well its not as campy as MW2019, but it still has a problem with the very fast TTK. Another issue I find with MP is the fact that operators plague the game for the life of me I can't understand why they the creators of the game opted to turn against the progress they made with customisation of WW2 to this very generic restricted approach that Cold War went for. Then capping off with issues I've found is that controller aim assist is far too strong, its practically playing the game for you this is something that needs to be addressed to me I find no fun in having a racing game give me corner and breaking assist and I feel the same way with a FPS game giving me a soulless approach with no real element of competitive nature... its not me doing it its the games design.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Zombies

It was my criticism of last years COD, they're dumbing this mode down and its harming the replay ability of it. It's good that we can opt to play as we choose with how we level our overall character between MP and Zombies. The operators steal from all the charm and charisma of the past zombie integrations, I'm literally telling you at this point Infinite Warfare did a better job with Zombies in the memorable fashion.

But the story mode is short and really not worth playing through more than once. Zombies is at its worst here, literally no fun to be had with this mode. And while multiplayer has gotten better gameplay and machanic wise, overpowered guns, lag, bad hit detection and poor map design makes it ulmost unplayable. Wait for a steep sale on this one. Expand

It requires a patch just to be able to play this game. The campaign should be playable without a patch, but the developers were too cheap and lazy to make that happen. The short campaign only lasts for about 5 hours, and the greedy developers are charging $70 for this game. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the last game. The explosion sounds are laughable. The missions are boring and repetitive. The story is a pile of garbage. The plane section looks so fake, it feels like a carnival ride.

For goodness sake, what is it with these videogame developers being so obsessed with making a bunch of military games set in World War II and even the first World War? Enough already. Most people that will buy this game don't even know the Big Three Allies and its leaders of World War II, let alone when the war took place. This just goes to show how out of touch these developers are with their audience. People who love books would be interested in World War, not gamers. If they are going to make another World War game, then at least be historically accurate. They couldn't even get that right, which begs the question why couldn't they just make the game about a fictional war in modern setting? And just like any other modern big budget videogame studio, the developers added woke SJW trash in the game.

The multiplayer is beyond horrible. The maps are so poorly designed. The spawn points are pathetic. The zombies mode is easily the worst zombie mode I have ever played in a Call of Duty game. The mode is objective-based rather than round-based. It lacks challenge compared to previous installments. You can't even pause in zombies mode when you are playing solo. The physics are poor and the AI is incredibly stupid. I don't recommend this game at all.
