Death Stranding lives up to its towering expectations, if it does not exceed them. That does not automatically mean that the game is perfect. For example, the story and the actual gameplay are very unrelated, and the game has a rough edge. And yet Death Stranding is extraordinary. The complex and layered story, the serious gameplay full of comic notes, the deserted and oppressive world and the subtle connection with other players create extreme contrasts and a range of emotions.

Death Stranding is dizzying, unshakable in its belief it is doing something worthwhile, and it's one of the most important games of this decade.

A fresh new gameplay experience with breathtaking photorealistic yet surreal visuals, Death Stranding provides an experience that goes beyond the usual boundaries of videogames. Future developers may draw influence from the game’s redefined concept of terrain and its traversal.

An experiment extraordinaire, Death Stranding is a game like no other. Full of repetition and lengthy chores, yet ingenious and philosophical in its own accord. It is a sight to behold, and something you have to dedicate your whole month if you want to witness its true potential.

While not for everyone, Death Stranding still is a breathtaking experience thanks to a beautiful world filled to the brim with amazing characters. The gameplay lacks some variety in some ways, yet with such an amazing story you just want to keep playing. The same thing applies for the stealth-sections which are some of the best Kojima has ever created.

Death Standing proves itself as a unique, palpable new IP, filled with rich storytelling both in narrative and gameplay. The beginning of the game suffers from long gaps of time intended for learning the ropes, but the ship rights itself once it finally turns the corner. Despite that with a handful of missteps, a deep, potent message of coming together rings through every aspect of Death Stranding that dazzles the game as a whole. If you give it the time, Death Stranding will offer you something most games never do.

Death Stranding is an irredeemable piece of garbage that should serve as a warning to publishers who give developers carte blanche to create ‘art’.

Most unusual game experience ever, fantastic actors and storyline, meditative gameplay. Game for smart users, not for stupid Call of Duty fans. 10/10

You're a delivery guy in a Kojima game, buyers who understand what those two things mean can more or less predict what the game is going to be like. There is a lot of terrain navigation and a methodical approach to inventory management/ travel routes is required. Losing packages can be frustrating but it's part of the fun of the game (think Eve Online style despair feeling of losing stuff you've collected). I've been enjoying the game so far and love the motion capture in the cut scenes (there are many, again this is a Kojima game). There is combat but it's spread out and can be frustrating because your goal is usually to deliver a bunch of cargo, not be an action hero fighter. There are easy ways around combat once you learn a handful of simple strategies (Sam is not a great fist fighter). Terminal entries and emails have been interesting and fill in some of the lore but won't be attractive for gamers who hate reading. The combination of the soundtrack and overall aesthetic of the world, environments and characters has kept me hooked and continuing to build the chiral network. I've seen a few of my friend's structures in my game and it's fun to see where they've been and use items they've left as a free shortcut. It's a slow paced game and is almost more like a cinema experience early on. While this definitely isn't a game for everyone, I have no idea why some are rating it a 0 as if they're surprised about what's in it, to me it was basically what I expected it to be. Kojima delivery guy game, people are mad about too many cut scenes and having to do delivery guy stuff? Expand

Game as a narrative media is feasible, but this is more like a long TV drama than a game when the gameplay is minimal and tedious.
No joy in playing a boring delivery mission over and over.
BTW, the gist of the story is nothing new but a lecturing from a highbrow elite...Kojima just want to say the BAD of this current tribal society...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Endless Walking in an unpopulated, drab world, I don't care if I can see individual blades of grass - Prettied-up rubbish is still rubbish.

Enemies pose no risk whatsoever: kill the MULEs, no voidouts happen; get dragged into a Catcher fight, just run away for 30 seconds, the BT "threat" disappears entirely. To think Kojima even bothered putting in a Very Easy Mode...

To anybody who got brainwashed into liking the gameplay loop, it's called the Skinner Box: you get hooked on longer and longer (literal) trips to get the reward of talking heads (Chiralgrams) showering you with thanks and Facebook Likes - Kojima is abusing your probable social media addiction to condition you into a MULE, much like how they went crazy in-game.

Strand Game is nothing new, it's worse actually: to connect with others you leave behind bits and vehicles? I'll do you one better, couch co-op. There's better environment diversity and traversal in Minecraft. But there's the Story to look forward to! About that...

Just watch the 11 hours of Cinematic Cutscenes on YouTube for free, the $60 you would've spent would go better to a real game that's actually a game, or fun. As a Sci-Fi and Sword-&-Planet junkie, I can smell a Soft-Magic Deus Ex Machina a mile away and when it's being passed off as a Hard-Science plot device. More like plot hole. Kojima deliberately places the event of the story during a period of Cryptic Mystery of the nature of the Death Stranding, so there's plenty of opportunities to leeway when certain Sci-Fi Junk doesn't seem convenient. Like how Fragile didn't wither to death under TimeFall, or how Lady Strand's Ka and Ha (I by chance alone knew enough Egyptian Fable to know the terms, good luck trying to get an explanation of these concepts from the Game) somehow can survive as independent entities, and don't anybody try to defend it as Extinction Entity Magic. Really, all those millions spent on hiring a celebrity cast could have been better spent on real writers rather than Hideo's own subpar Fanfic scribbles, or getting debut actors their shot earning rave renown from skill alone and not namedrops. At least make for more visual storytelling by doing more showing and less telling. All the human interaction in the Cutscenes can be done entirely live rather than in MoCap. All the MoCap render are them standing and talking, a wasted production value.

To all the Fanboys who fawned over Kojima over Metal Gear, you finally got what you wanted, Kojima unchained. If this was the best he can muster with Nobody telling him No or imposing their deadlines on him, he made THIS, makes you wonder how MGS was so successful if it wasn't his 'Auter' contribution to it. Another Psyche, he plastered "A Hideo Kojima Game" everywhere so you can associate his name as responsible for the game's success when that couldn't be further from the truth.

If nothing else in the "Game" or "Movie" can convince you of how poor this vanity project of an underwhelming Walking Simulator this is, just remember that Famitsu gave Death Stranding a 40/40 perfect score after their Editor-in-Chief had a cameo in the Game. It's Tit-for-Tat. Any Perfect Score you read from the Professional critics, just ask yourself just how much Kojima paid them to give that score.
