It’s a bedtime story based on a nightmare that somehow comes out on the more pleasant, earnest end of that old school madness, and while it’s a pain in the butt to find your way around without a map, the gorgeous settings and pitch-perfect platforming action make it feel worth the struggle.

Battle Princess Madelyn is everything you need in a retro romp. The lack of a map with limited direction may be frustrating at times, but the heart and soul of Ghosts & Goblins remains true to form. Battle Princess Madelyn is a joy to play and a must for retro fans.

For every part of the game I slammed up against, it was bookended by some excellent moments. While not always clearly defined, Battle Princess Madelyn is still a damn decent excursion into the storied history of 16-bit platforming.

For better and worse, Battle Princess Madelyn is an authentic retro experience. Its combat is simple yet unexciting and the lack of many features commonplace in modern games make it only appeal to those who long for the grueling games of long ago.

I want to love Battle Princess Madeyln. NPCs exude personality, the dialogue is always clever, and I admire Madelyn’s pluck, self-confidence, and determination. She is forthright, strong, and always willing to lend a hand — she’s a tremendous hero, and I’d love to see more stories about her in the future. But in her current incarnation? I’m just not patient enough to ignore the flaws despite all the good she’s trying to do.

Battle Princess Madelyn had all the makings of a charmer (there are never enough games featuring a warrior princess!) but it turned out to be a downer. Given ill-defined looks and sloppy level design, sprawling here and there for no other purpose than to pester you, the game is too committed to the gaming of bygone days. The best bet for retro-inclined developers would be fitting their games into modern conventions, and not fall into same old pitfalls that used to plague the genre. Even though your friend Frankie doesn’t realize it, there has been remarkable evolutionary steps in the gaming.

Battle Princess Madelyn has some lovely animated cut scenes to enjoy, the plot begins in a charming manner that brings to mind the Princess Bride, and its retro inspired pixelated graphics are on point. If only they were attached to fun and compelling gameplay, then Battle Princess Madelyn really could have been a contender to capture the crown of Ghost ‘n Goblins. As it stands, it’s probably best to avoid this one and break out your SNES from storage instead.

In a word? Yes. The developer is admittedly a tiny outfit and pulling off a game of this style and feel is no easy task, even for a team 10x the size, but they’ve seemingly done it.

I’ve put in a few hours of the game, and, whilst it’s not perfect, the chiptunes, sweet controls and beautiful pixelart have reinforced to myself why I bought the game.

If you were brought up on hard games, ones with no real handholding and that require skill? Battle Princess Madelyn is for you , and I’m happy to say that it is exactly what I hoped it would be for me. It transports me back in time, when gamers enjoyed a challenge and had to memorise level layouts (or draw them), enemy placement and the crucial jumps necessary to not only succeed, but also give the player a real sense of achievement for progression.

Recommended. Massively well done to the Causal Bit Games team.

I really wanted to like this game, it looked great in its trailers and previews in the last month. However it plays and looks just ok. TheI really wanted to like this game, it looked great in its trailers and previews in the last month. However it plays and looks just ok. The animations of Madelyn really need a few frames more, SNES SGnG had by far more smooth animations. The stage design and enemy character design also is lacking the final touch, as I dont feel like replaying the game or remember any of the stages or enemy characters to be outstanding or worthy to be in the same or even near level as Capcom`s Classic.
The game is quite easy - but the enemy bullets effects & collecting bonus coins effects makes the game quite distracting ( almost overkill) to play. A bit less effects but more work on animations would be more in this case.
