Return Of The Obra Dinn - Launch Trailer
LEVEL (Czech Republic)Dec 31, 2018Lesson of purpose and purity of game design. All the technical and game principles are subject to great narrative and an experience you will not forget. [Issue#291]
Oct 18, 2018This is a game I can not stop thinking about. I think about it at work -- either remembering crazy moments I didn't see coming, or reflecting on recently discovered information and its implications. This is absolutely a "thinking man's game," and it's one that I hope other developers (or Mr. Pope himself) decide to ape and expand on. Despite the fact that this isn't a detective game, I've never felt more like a dick.
Oct 25, 2018The creator of Papers Please offers us a modern classic again.Return of the Obra Dinn uses an original and personal narrative in a development that makes us feel like true detectives. Visually it is an exercise in retro love and good taste. Lucas Pope delivers us one of the games of the year.
Dec 2, 2018There is no thrilling story, colorful characters or allure of the high seas. Instead, Return of the Obra Dinn is a bold, massive puzzle, an exquisite workout for your 'gray cells'. Unfortunately, the innovative gameplay mechanic gradually loses its appeal and excitement towards the finale, and I had to muster my willpower in order to beat the game in one go.

People don't understand how much work went into this game. The story is great along with the puzzle mechanics of this game. Some of them get really hard at the end. To me, this game is worth 20 dollars. I spent more on not so feature-rich games at $60+. I strongly recommend this game if you like murder mysteries with a puzzle element.… Expand
Jan 16, 2019Return of the Obra Dinn is definitely, and I say this without shame, the best puzzle game of all time.

Amazing story, Amazing art style, Amazing Characters.
The only gripe I have is that you can't buy that amazing soundtrack anywhere right now!
Don't cheat, you'll ruin it for yourself,
Play with a friend, bounce ideas off each other,
And for god's sake, don't do it all in one go.
It's like eating Ice cream, you need to pace yourself.… Expand

It combines a beautiful aesthetic, wonderful atmosphere, a stunning story that constantly intrigued me and some very interesting and unique mechanics. When I spent almost three hours just trying to work out a few fates approaching the end of the game and then I suddenly picked up on something tiny I hadn't before and everything slotted together — was a truly wonderous moment.
I would highly recommend Return of the Obra Dinn to pretty much anyone who likes logic puzzles or working things out, and to anyone interested in mechanics or a story you uncover yourself. I personally game quite a bit and love this type of game, however I also know a couple who don't play many games and are running through this together and are having an absolutely brilliant time.
I have given this review a 10 as I feel it is so close to perfect it merits no less, however it could be improved. Maybe it's the style I play but I found myself moving back and forth through the book more than I'd like. Once you have confirmed an identity, you can't use the sketch to find out information like crew number or nationality without going back to a different page. I also desperately wanted a way to print out the sketch and manifest to make my own notes on paper, as that would have made it slightly easier to keep track of my notes. These are minor improvements that would make the game faultless in my eyes however, so are not worth worrying about too much!
Best to go in without any spoilers if possible, it will make what you work out yourself all the more sweet!… Expand

The simple aesthetic fits in well with the setting, muting some of the gruesomeness to more clearly show you what is actually going on in each scene. The little details can end up being very important and something as simple as a turn of phrase used in a scene can end up being the difference between identifying a victim and not. My only complaint about this game is that there doesn't seem to be a way to go directly into a previously viewed memory directly from the log book. If it's there, it is not obvious how to do it. It would save a lot of time.… Expand

A detective puzzle story very unlike any other I have played. The game requires close attention, the ability to sift through information and quite a bit of backtracking. If this doesn't sound like your cuppa tea, then give it a miss.
I wish I could say I enjoyed every minute in the game, but the first hour was the most exasperating and frustrating experience, however, once I got into a groove of how to negotiate between different scenes and gather information, I was totally overwhelmed by the intricacy and nexus of connections and I felt a part of an organic living system.
Despite fantastic writing, a superb art style, great soundscape, and addictive gameplay, there are some shortcomings: the aforementioned cumbersome nature of finding information previously missed, and some of the wording of how the characters die, which you have to identify to progress in the game, can be confusing and down to interpretation; what is the difference between someone being "spiked" or "speared" for example. Once I got into the game, I felt it a little short as well.
That being said, this is a strong contender for my Game of the Year… Expand
